After the ventilation system design is finalized and the amount of exhaust air is calculated, the fans are selected based on the resistance to airflow through the intake louvers or hood and air filters with some minor losses through the exhaust opening and turbulence in the mining center layout.

Fans may look the same but are not equal in aerodynamic design. Axial fans differ in efficiency based on the propeller and panel designs. And better fan efficiency means increased performance, lower power consumption, and less horsepower.

Another standard design draws in the outside air through the rain louvers and an optional air filter bank and exhausts the heated air through rooftop exhaust fans.  This design is predicated on the rig arrangement and maximum cooling.

In both cases, fan size and the number of fans is determined by amount of air needed to reduce total heat loads and resistance to flow.  Don’t be fooled by companies that rate fans at 0” WC.  Fans always have resistance and it’s a red flag when you see fans rated at 0” of pressure.  Call us we can help you!

A fan’s performance is based on air volume (CFM) and resistance to airflow (inches WG). When resistance increases, the volume or CFM is reduced. The Hartzell fan curve shows the difference in fan performance at 31,000 CFM and 0 inches WG versus 15,000 CFM if 1.5″ WG is added.

Knowing the resistance to airflow from the intake louvers, dampers, air filters, and internal objects and including that in your fan selection will prevent overheating of the miners and lack of mining performance.
